Wooden Railway Toys Recalled.

Consumer Recall!

New York - The Consumer Product Safety Commission on Wednesday announced a voluntary recall of 1.5 million Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway toys because they contain lead paint.

Consumers are advised to take the recalled toys away from young children immediately.
Illinois-based RC2 Corporation says surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. There have been no reports of any injuries associated with this recall.

Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 for a replacement toy. For additional information, contact RC2 toll-free at 866-725-4407 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Central Time, Monday through Thursday and between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Central Time Friday. Consumers can also visit the firm's Web site at Recalls.rc2.com

Los Angeles, CA - LAPD To Let 911 Callers Send Text Messages, Photos.

Los Angeles. CA - The Los Angeles Police Department today announced plans for a series of improvements to the city's 911 system, saying callers will soon be able to use text messages, photos and even video from cellphones to seek emergency assistance.

Officials told the L.A. Police Commission that they were beginning to seek money to install the new system, which they believe could aid crime fighting by providing callers with alternative methods for alerting authorities and police with new visual evidence.

"Sometimes a person calls 911 and says they just saw a robbery and they've snapped an image or video of the getaway car," said Sgt. Lee Sands. "We want to find a way to get that to officers in the field as fast as possible." [latimes]

New York - Rabbis Say Strawberries Not Kosher

Strawberries

The CRC [Central Rabbinical Congress of NY, Hisachdus Harabbonim] has issued a pesak today that frozen strawberries from Bodek are 100% OK if the berries are cooked or ground.

Jewish religious authorities have banned strawberries, due to hidden bugs that's not visible to the eye, and are therefore considered un-kosher until a new cleaning method is found.

An emergency alert was released proclaiming that even with extensive checks and washing, the berries are not to be eaten. It read: “Until now, the method of washing strawberries thoroughly in soapy water in order to remove any insects was considered by Jewish religious law sufficient. However, recent tests have proven that even after this rigorous procedure, insects are still present.

“Until this problem is solved therefore, fresh strawberries should not be eaten.”

Los Angeles: Beware of drug-pusher!

June 1, 2007

Please be advised that a man who goes by the name Shmuel Yaakov has been circulating in the Hancock Part area and has given at least one child drugs in an alley behind a shul. He has reportedly bragged that he has given other children candy laced with drugs. This man is in his 50s, of average height, with a black-greyish beard and dark, Sephardic features. He sometimes wears white garb. He is known to be violent.

Rabbanim who are familiar with the situation are convinced that Shmuel Yaakov is a danger to the children in our community. Do not allow him to be alone with children in your shul; he is even more dangerous in alleys behind the shul.

The Rabbanim ask that you forward this email to your kehillah email list. This is an opportunity for parents to discuss with their children the need to be wary of strangers, specifically not to talk to or take candy (or anything else) from people they don’t know.

A community-wide strategy is being developed, in consultation with the authorities, to address the problem.
